Here are the main differences between Legacy and UEFI summarized by OAI:

1. Different infrastructure. Legacy BIOS, the traditional basic input and output system, serves as an earlier firmware interface. Its primary function is to initialize and test system hardware, and load an operating system upon startup. UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is a standard for a type of interface and stands as the successor to BIOS. It offers more modern features compared to BIOS.

2. Different boot methods. Legacy BIOS relies on MBR (Master Boot Record) for booting, allowing only one active partition per disk. While UEFI uses GPT (GUID Partition Table), permitting multiple boot partitions per disk, providing users with increased choices and flexibility.

3. Support different hard disk capacities. Legacy BIOS adopts MBR partitioning, supporting hard drives of up to 2TB, and allowing for the creation of up to four primary partitions. UEFI BIOS utilizes GPT partitioning, accommodating hard drive capacities of up to 18EB (Exabytes), with the capability to create an almost unlimited number of partitions.

4. Different security. UEFI supports Secure Boot, which can verify the legitimacy of the operating system before loading, prevent malware and unauthorized operating system loading, and thus enhance system security. Legacy BIOS does not have such security features, and the system is vulnerable to attacks and malware threats.

5. Different compatibility and scalability. UEFI BIOS supports 64-bit hardware and operating systems, while Legacy BIOS only supports 32-bit. Sin embargo, due to its longstanding presence, many old hardware and software still rely on Legacy BIOS for startup and operation. Por lo tanto, En algunos casos, using traditional BIOS mode may have better compatibility.

For mini PCs equipped with the latest processors, UEFI is undoubtedly a better choice. It not only delivers faster startup speeds and heightened efficiency but also supports a broader range of modern hardware and software. Sin embargo, in specific instances, such as when utilizing older hardware or running particular software, Legacy may be more appropriate.
