USB ports are a standard feature on mini PCs, but do you know what USB really is?
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a widely adopted interface standard used in computers and embedded devices to connect peripherals such as keyboards, mice, Drucker, external storage drives, and cameras. Among the USB standards, USB 2.0 und USB 3.0 are the most common, and they differ in five key areas:

USB 3.0 ports typically feature a blue connector interior for easy identification, while USB 2.0 ports are usually white or black.
2. Transfer Speed
USB 2.0: Theoretical maximum speed of 480 Mbps (about 60 MB/s)
USB 3.0: Theoretical maximum speed of 5 Gbit/s (about 625 MB/s)
USB 3.0 offers significantly faster data transfer, making it ideal for external SSDs, high-definition cameras, or data acquisition devices.
3. Wiring & Data Flow
USB 2.0 contains 4 internal wires and supports half-duplex communication (one direction at a time).
USB 3.0 contains 9 wires, allowing full-duplex communication (simultaneous two-way data transfer), which greatly increases bandwidth.
4. Power Output
USB 2.0 provides up to 500 mA of current (ungefähr 2.5 W)
USB 3.0 provides up to 900 mA of current (ungefähr 4.5 W)
The higher power output allows USB 3.0 ports to support more power-hungry devices, such as external drives, high-definition cameras, or industrial sensors. Actual charging speeds may still depend on the device’s supported charging protocol.
5. Kompatibilität
USB 3.0 ports are fully backward compatible, meaning they can work with earlier USB versions, inklusive USB 2.0.
A USB 2.0 device plugged into a USB 3.0 port will operate normally.
A USB 3.0 device plugged into a USB 2.0 port will function, but its transfer speed will be limited to the maximum of USB 2.0.
